Radford University also offers a variety of spectator sports, varsity basketball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse and tennis can all be enjoyed at the university’s Dedmon Center, a 78 -acre recreation and convocation facility.
The City operates an extensive program through the Department of Parks and Recreation. A variety of indoor activities, such as racquetball and basketball can be enjoyed at several city facilities. Outdoor activities are available at 14 city parks covering approximately 90 acres, where residents can enjoy picnicking, swimming, hiking and tennis. The Department also directs football, soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball leagues throughout the year.
The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Jefferson National Forest are less than an hour away. Both attractions offer spectacular scenery and a variety of recreational opportunities that include hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. Claytor Lake with its 108 mi. of shoreline is only 15 miles from the city and offers additional swimming, fishing and water skiing opportunities for area residents.
Nine golf courses at public and private facilities are located within 30 minutes of Radford. Radford’s close proximity to Roanoke enables residents the opportunity to enjoy theater, ballet and the symphony in addition to that offered by Radford University and Virginia Tech. The New River Valley Medical Center, a new state of the art hospital, is located just three miles outside the city.

The newly constructed Radford Public Library, with 13,654 square feet, contains a collection of 69,000 volumes and circulates in excess of 150,000 annually. City residents can also utilize the excellent library facilities at Radford University, Virginia Tech and New River Community College. These facilities offer a combined collection of over one million volumes.
The City of Radford has 35 places of worship within its corporate limits that represent the major Protestant denominations and the Roman Catholic Faith. The nearest Jewish synagogue is located in Roanoke.
The Radford area offers a diverse shopping environment for residents with a broad mix of retail and service outlets. Radford residents can also take advantage of the endless shopping opportunities available at the six malls and numerous shopping centers in the Christiansburg and Roanoke areas.
