Located in the heart of Southwest Virginia’s New River Valley, our small city has been offering an attractive lifestyle for its residents since early settlers arrived in 1750.

Nestled in a large bend in the New River, Radford covers approximately 9.63 square miles and is a diverse city full of commercial and recreational potential.

Radford’s small town quality offers some big city cultural and educational opportunities. Although located in an unspoiled area of low population density, Radford’s proximity to Interstate 81 (2 mi.) allows easy access to educational, commercial and industrial resources.

City Amenities

Radford has affordable homes in a variety of established neighborhoods, serviced by a transit system. The Radford Public Schools are proud to be fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education, have distinguished faculty, and be highly ranked in athletics.

The City operates an extensive program through the Department of Parks and Recreation. A variety of indoor activities, such as racquetball and basketball, can be enjoyed at several city facilities. Outdoor activities are available at 14 city parks covering approximately 90 acres, where residents can enjoy picnicking, swimming, hiking and tennis. The Department also directs football, soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball leagues throughout the year.

The City of Radford has 35 places of worship within its corporate limits that represent the major Protestant denominations and the Roman Catholic Faith. The nearest Jewish synagogue is located in Roanoke.

Regional Attractions & Resources

Radford’s close proximity to Roanoke enables residents the opportunity to enjoy theater, ballet and the symphony in addition to that offered by Radford University and Virginia Tech.

For outdoor lovers, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Jefferson National Forest are less than an hour away. Both attractions offer spectacular scenery and a variety of recreational opportunities that include hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. Claytor Lake with its 108 mi. of shoreline is less than 15 miles from the city and offers additional swimming, fishing and water skiing opportunities for area residents.

Numerous golf courses at public and private facilities are located within 30 minutes of Radford.  

The New River Valley Medical Center is located just three miles outside the city. Radford’s close proximity to Roanoke also gives residents the opportunity to utilize outstanding additional medical facilities found in that nearby city.

The Radford area offers a diverse shopping environment for residents with a broad mix of retail and service outlets. Radford residents can also take advantage of shopping opportunities, in the surrounding Christiansburg and Roanoke areas.
